Question #133
Must women be silent during a Bible class?
The Bible teaches that women should be silent in the church. However, when is “the church” end? For example, in Bible classes, sometimes some women are asked to participate in chain prayers, and at the dinner table some women believe it’s okay to lead the prayer along-side their Christian husband. So, can you provide me with scripture that explains when it is right for women to be silent at prayer and when it is not? Also, and with the same question of women being silent in the church, when is it appropriate for women to stop teaching boys in Bible class, devotionals, and church sponsored activities? Are we to separate the worship period from the Bible class time?
The Answer:
You are referred to Question 22, Question 40, Question 41, Question 44, Question 49, Question 54, Question 65, Question 90, and Question 116, each of which deals with some aspect of the role of women in the church, particularly the role of women in the worship assembly. Additionally, you are referred to Class: Questions, Lesson 4, The Role of Women in the Church. The aspect of this question that is not addressed in the documents referenced is a woman’s leading prayer in private devotions in the home. The scripture speaks directly to the role of women in public worship. Passages that deal with public worship do not address private home devotions or giving of thanks at meals. If that is the case, such activity would be in the realm of opinion and opinions of men are not binding.
