Question #260
What about original sin?
What is the church of Christ position on original sin and do they recognize it exists?
The Answer:
The scripture does not teach the doctrine of original sin. The earliest that the doctrine was espoused was in the writings of Irenaeus in his second century struggle against Gnosticism. In the reformation John Calvin was its best known proponent and the modern doctrine bears his name in that it is commonly referred to as “Calvinism.” Calvinism has five basic tenets—total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saint. If any one of these tenets is false, the whole doctrine fails. On this website you can find discussions of them in various contexts such as the lessons on Ezekiel, Daniel, Romans (see especially the discussions of chapters 9-11), and the Church available on this web site. You might start with Question 68. Scripture recognizes that sin exists and that it necessitated the vicarious death of our Lord. Students of theology recognize that the doctrine of original sin exists. That said, careful students of scripture recognize that the doctrine of original sin is not taught in scripture and is contrary to what the scripture does teach. The invitation of the Lord that ALL who labor and are heavy laden may come unto Him is sufficient to demonstrate that doctrine’s falsity. Add to that the exhortation of Christ for little children to come unto him for of such were the kingdom of heaven. If the doctrine of original sin is true, and all, even infants are totally depraved, the only conclusion is that the kingdom of heaven is at least partially composed of those who are totally depraved. Who can believe it?
