Question #427
Are you saying the church shouldn’t discipline church members?
Everything that I’ve read on your web site so far is 100% biblical and is in harmony with Scripture. Although question #45 does concern me. It could be that I’m just completely misunderstanding it but are you saying that the church of Christ doesn’t or shouldn’t discipline church members?
The Answer:
Thank you for your comments about our web site. Question 45 by no means teaches that the church of Christ doesn’t or shouldn’t discipline church members. The question asks “Why does the church not practice disfellowship?” It doesn’t ask if the church should practice disfellowship. Neither does it ask what the Bible teaches about withdrawing fellowship from a member. It assumes the practice is Biblical and asks why congregations don’t practice what the scripture teaches by withdrawing from a member when the circumstances justify it. As stated in the answer, this approach is more of a judgment question rather than a Bible question. Unfortunately the question did not give enough specific information to enable an answer beyond providing some reasons why congregations don’t withdraw even when they should because a member’s conduct justifies and even requires it. If you will use the “search” function on the website using “church discipline” you will discover that the website mentions it several times.
