Question #383
What about marriage to a second cousin?
What is your church’s belief with 2nd cousin marriage? What scripture do you use for your belief ?
The Answer:
First, the expression “your church” is incorrect. I have no church and do not seek to have a church. I could only do so by rejecting the church of the Lord that he promises to establish (Matt. 16:16) and did establish (Acts 2). When I believed, repented, and was baptized the Lord added me to his church (Acts 2:41). I have never become a part of any other church because it would be wrong to do so. This comment is not made to be critical. It is simply a matter of keeping the record straight.
There is no scripture that prevents the marriage of second cousins.
The law recognizes marriage by consanguinity and marriage by affinity. Consanguinity is marriage between those who are related by blood. Marriage by second cousins would fall into this category. Marriage by affinity is marriage between those who are related by marriage. A marriage between two brothers to two sisters (not their own) would fall into this category. States have different laws on who can marry those related by blood. I am informed that no state prohibits marriage between second cousins. That information comes from the internet and is not a legal opinion. If someone in you family is contemplating such a marriage you should have them check the law in the state issuing the marriage license and in the state where they live if different from the state issuing the license.
