Question #373
Is it wrong to hang a cross in your home?
Is it biblically wrong to hang decorative crosses in you home? It seems they are everywhere, and I just can’t help but wonder what Jesus would think if he saw cute decorative crosses in peoples homes after all he suffered on one but have not found any evidence either way.
The Answer:
What is biblically wrong is to do anything that diminishes the gift of God and the sacrifice of Jesus. The death of Christ took an emblem of shame and made it a symbol of glory. It is as if the electric chair had become a symbol of victory. Today’s world has cheapened the cross. It has become little more than a decoration for the house or a piece of jewelry. The residents and the wearers give its real meaning little to no thought. Some probably don’t know why they have one except that everyone else does. Some argue that it makes them think of Christ and his death and for them that may be true, but it is likely true only occasionally and most of the time they pass it by without thought. If they want to think about Jesus they should hold an open bible and read it often. If they want to think about Jesus with an emblem, there are two in the Lord’s Supper, both authorized by our Lord.
