Question #291
How did people call on the name of the Lord in the Old Testament? Are there any modern day apostles?
In the book of Genesis, it is stated that men began to call upon the name of the Lord. I understand in the New Testament we call upon the name of the Lord through baptism. How did they do that in the Old Testament?
- What about people’s calling themselves apostles today and using Paul’s conversion for proof?
The Answer:
For the relationship between confession and baptism see “Class: Lord’s Church, Lesson 5, especially pages 10-12. Confession is related to baptism because it likely refers to the confession of faith that is made at baptism. See Acts 22:16.
Using Paul’s conversion as one born is due season (1 Cor. 15:8) as support for modern claims of apostleship is plain silly. Paul saw the Lord, was called by the Lord, received inspiration from the Lord, and demonstrated his calling by miracles. Those who claim such today are either deceived or liars or both. That is strong language; however, it is deserved by their ludicrous claims designed to deceive people and to lead them astray. No man who intended to preach just the gospel has any need to make such a claim. He has the blood bought gospel; he has a message confirmed by signs and wonders; he needs no more. To assert that he needs more is to deny the sufficiency of the gospel. The scripture is sufficient to make “the man of God perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Tim. 3:17. What need we more?
