Question #268
What is the difference between fornication and adultery?
I have just read the article on this subject, and would like to know the difference between fornication and adultery? Thank you very much.
The Answer:
Fornication includes sexual intercourse (including oral sex) between persons outside of marriage or, if a married person is involved, with someone other than one’s spouse. Adultery occurs when one (1) puts away a spouse (2) for a reason other than fornication and (3) marries another. All three are required for adultery to be present.
Some contend that any illicit sex on the part of a spouse is adultery, but the scripture seems to require the remarriage. If divorce in the absence of fornication is always adultery, Paul would not have permitted a wife or husband to “depart” (a Greek word meaning “divorce”) because to do so would be condoning adultery. What he did not permit was remarriage. The requirement was to return to the spouse from whom he or she departed or remain unmarried. 1 Cor. 15:11-12.
