Question #266
Aren’t you encouraging divorce?
I’ve been browsing your q and a, noticed a few questions like 2, seems like you are encouraging divorce to get out of adulterous relationship. God hates divorce, Mal. 2:16. Granted, Jesus speaks about adultery in Mk. 10:11-12, however in 1 Cor 7:17-24 Paul says to continue to live in situation the Lord has put you when he called you. This would seem to apply to some of questions, although I may be wrong. Great site by the way.
The Answer:
You are correct that God hates divorce. That is at least one reason that he placed such high regard upon it in the New Testament and why he placed emphasis on safeguarding its sanctity by placing a great penalty on its corruption. Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 7 does not instruct people to continue in adultery if they are already in adultery when they are converted. If God did not hate divorce he would not command that the marriage bed be undefiled and promise judgment on whoremongers and adulterers. Hebrews 13:4. If you wish to study the need meaning of repentance when people are living in adultery, please study Class: Questions, Lesson 2. If you wish to study the so-called “Pauline Privilege,” please go to Lesson 11 of the classes on 1 Corinthians. There you will find an article on the meaning of both the “Pauline Privilege” and the meaning of “Remain As Called.”
