Question #221
Does the death of an elder’s wife disqualify him?
Does the death of an Elder’s wife disqualifies him? In 1st Tim. 3:1-7, what does the husband of one wife really mean?
The Answer:
I know people on both sides of this issue, and I do not believe that we can reach a dogmatic conclusion.
In my opinion, the elder would not be disqualified. Verse 5 of the section you cite gives what we in the legal business call the policy behind the requirement that an elder have a wife and believing children. In particular, those requirements allow us to know whether the man is able to rule his own house before we turn him loose on the house of God. Presumably, we should already know that about someone whose wife dies while he is already an elder. A similar issue would arise when an elder has grown children who leave the church after they leave his house. Again, he no longer has the rule over them, and so, in my opinion, he would not be disqualified. But again, I could argue this question both ways.
