Question #216
What are you thoughts on David Lipscomb not voting and on his being a pacifist?
You quoted David Lipscomb in lesson 4, (I believe). What are you thoughts on him not voting or being involved in government, and on his being a pacifist?
The Answer:
I disagree with him on both of those issues.
I believe that a Christian must be a good citizen, and thus must vote. Paul, for example, said in Titus 3:1 that we should obey magistrates. But Acts 5:29 gives us the guiding principle that we must obey God rather than man. See this lesson and this lesson for more about this subject.
As for pacifism, I can see how reasonable Christians can differ on this issue (as many do), but in my opinion a Christian may fight for his country. (Again, with the guiding principle of Acts 5:29 always in mind.) Cornelius, for example, was a Roman centurion, and yet Acts 10:2 tells us he was a devout man who feared God. There is no record that Peter ever told him to quit being a centurion. Also, Genesis 9:6 and Romans 13:4 tell us, in my opinion, that a Christian may kill in some circumstances.
