Question #157
Why doesn’t the Bible say more about drinking and gambling?
I’m listening to an audio sermon about social drinking and gambling and had to ask myself, why weren’t these issues thoroughly addressed in the bible? I would also include drug use to the list. Obviously these type activities come with terrible consequences so why weren’t they given more space in the bible? Were these not social issues of that time? Thanks for all the work and willingness you all are putting toward this website.
The Answer:
The Bible actually says quite a bit about drinking (which would cover other intoxicants), but admittedly says much less about gambling. (See this lesson.) Others have wondered why other social issues (such as abortion, for example) are seemingly given short shrift while numerous passages address others (such as homosexuality, for example). The Bible was not intended to be catalog of do’s and don’ts. Instead, it contains principles by which we can determine what is right and what is wrong. In that way it can be applied to the social ills of our day as easily as to the social ills of the first century. We can read the Bible and know that drunkenness, abortion, homosexuality, and gambling are sins, along with other activities that have yet to be invented by the inventors of evil things (Romans 1:30). As for why some of those problems are dealt with at more length in the Bible is likely because they were greater problems at the time. But the general principles that were used to deal with those specific problems can be applied just as easily to the specific problems of our day.
