Question #128
Does lust constitute scriptural grounds for divorce?
Good evening gentlemen. I have been confronted with the questions of lust as it pertains to adultery. I have heard it stated that if a man or woman lusts in their heart for another person then they have indeed committed adultery - in effect, “cheated” on his or her spouse if they are married. The question that I have is, Does that constitute scriptural grounds for divorce? Is the scripture presented in Matt. 5:28 meant to be taken in this manner? I have had several debates on this subject and was curious what the stance should be from a scriptural point of view…
The Answer:
These two questions both inquire if “lust in the heart” in the absence of fornication entitles the party of the lusting spouse to a scriptural divorce. The answer to this question is contained in Lesson 2 on Marriage & Divorce from our class on Questions & Answers About the Bible. The inquirer is also directed to the Answer to Question 107 in this section of Thy Word Is Truth.
