Question #92
With whom were the Old Testament covenants?
What are the covenants God made in the book of Genesis and with whom?
The Answer:
In Genesis 6:18 and 9:9-17 God made a covenant with Noah. The covenant arose purely from God’s own initiative. It was universal in scope, unconditional, and everlasting.
In Genesis 15:8-18 and 17:1-14 God made a covenant with Abraham. God promised Abraham a land and descendants; Abraham was commanded to keep the covenant. Circumcision was given as the sign of the covenant. The covenant was established with Isaac. 17:19-21.
God made other Old Testament covenants as well. For example, God made a covenant with Israel at Sinai (Horeb). It was ratified by a covenant sacrifice and the sprinkling of blood (Exodus 24:4-8). God made a covenant with David that his descendants would have an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12-17; Psalm 89; Psalm 132; 2 Samuel 23:5; cf. Isa 55:3f.).
From time to time God renewed covenants. Some of the most important were on the plains of Moab (Deuteronomy 29), at Shechem in the days of Joshua (Joshua 24), when Jehoida was able to restore the Davidic line of kings under Joash (2 Kings 11), in the days of Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:10), and in the days of Josiah (2 Kings 23:3).
