Question #73
What should those whose marriages are adulterous do when they obey the gospel?
Okay, I understand the biblical standing on divorce and remarriage. What I need to know is where I stand as a Christian when I, as well as my husband have been divorced and remarried with no biblical grounds for doing either. We have both asked forgiveness and truly believe ourselves to have been forgiven and are striving our best to serve God as the best Christians we can be.
The Answer:
There is only one answer that can be given to this question – the answer of scripture. Based upon the question, the inquirer knows and understands what the scripture teaches, but seeks some answer in addition or beyond what scripture says. This we cannot do. This subject has been discussed in the answers to Question 2 and Question 28. No other answer can be given. Any other answer would be the answer of man and not God. Any other answer would not change the word of God, and it is that word by which we shall be judged. John 12:48. The honest answer is that “we must obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29. One cannot continue in an adulterous relationship after baptism any more than a thief could keep stolen goods after baptism. Baptism must be preceded by repentance. (Acts 2:38)
