Question #309
Where is the authority for a song leader?
Is there/Where is the church’s scriptural authority for the use of a Song Leader?
The Answer:
There is no scripture which speaks of a “song leader.” If, however, you are suggesting 1) that having a song leader is therefore wrong or 2) that any practice men wish to follow is just as acceptable as the use of a song leader, you are wrong on both counts.
Christians sing in worship. Worship must be done decently and in order. 1 Cor. 14:40. This cannot be done if when we come together each one has a psalm (KJV) or hymn (ESV). Someone must select the hymns; someone must start the hymns; someone must keep all singing the hymns together. Otherwise confusion reigns, and God is not the author of confusion. 1 Cor. 14:33. Since worship cannot be conducted as it is commanded to be conducted without a leader, a leader of songs is necessary just the same as a leader of prayer.
Since a song leader is authorized by scripture, the use of a song leader cannot be used to justify practices that are not authorized by scripture.
