Question #178
What about Christians wearing the title “Doctor”?
Over the past few years I have noticed within our brotherhood that ministers have been using the title Dr. (Doctor) My question is what has changed since Pentecost? As I have been studying the Bible I see where the brethren were called just that "Brethrens. "No where in the scriptures I see where Paul, Silas, Timothy, Peter, etc… ever used the term Doctor (Dr.) to reference themselves. Please help me to understand why is it that our ministers in the gospel has that authority. Throughout the beginning of the book of Acts, Luke made mention of brethren. The only person I can see to use a reference to the Word Doctor would be Luke, he was a Physician of medicine.
The Answer:
Assuming the title is not be used dishonestly (such as, for example, by someone who is not a doctor or by someone who ordered a degree from a mail order school), I do not believe it is wrong to use that appellation in the church. Instead, it is just a part of that persons’ name. You could just as easily argue that we should not use “Mr.” or “Mrs.” or even military titles.
Where it becomes wrong (and this may be your point) is when such a title is used to elevate someone among his brethren either by the person himself or by others. It would also be wrong to use such a title as a religious title as in the way the denominations use the title “Reverend.”
(By way of full disclosure, this answer is from someone with a Ph.D. and a J.D.)
