Question #160
Why did Ananias call Saul a brother prior to his being baptized?
In what way, was Ananias calling Saul a Brother, if at this time he has not been baptized?
The Answer:
Ananias is reported as calling Saul “brother” in two passages – Acts 9:17 and Acts 22:13. The scripture does not state why Ananias used that term and so we cannot know with certainty. Two possibilities have been suggested. It could have been because they were both Jews and in that sense brothers in a fleshly relationship. (See Romans 9:3, for example.) It could have been because Saul of Tarsus was then obviously a penitent believer in Christ and Ananias was acknowledging that penitent faith and anticipating the relationship that they would have in Christ once Paul had been baptized.
We can most certainly know that Ananias did not call Saul “brother” because Saul had already been saved on the road to Damascus, as many so dogmatically assert. If Saul had already been saved, then he was saved without having his sins washed away, and thus he was saved without the cleansing of the blood of Christ. Ananias made this clear in Acts 22:16 when, after he had called Saul “brother,” he commanded Saul: ”16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”
